Profile
Rajen H. Khwaja belongs to the 1976 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and hails from the Andhra Pradesh cadre. He has a BA (Hons.) degree from St.Stephen’s College, Delhi, and a post-graduate in MA (History) as his specialization from the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh.
Rajen has a vast administrative experience and professional expertise that covers a wide range of sectors which include Governance, Infrastructure, Policy Implementation, Public Services, Institutional Reforms, Management of Public Sector undertaking, and Environment and Forest issues. He is a committed Environmentalist with special interest in the conservation of Biological Diversity.
He retired in February 2014 from service, after completing 38 years. During his career, he held numerous assignments, both in the Government of India and also the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh.
Some of the key roles he held at the central level are as Joint Secretary, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India; Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, and Secretary, Ministry of Mines, Government of India.
Some of his roles at the state-level comprise Collector & District Magistrate, Khammam; Managing Director of AP State Housing Corporation Ltd; Commissioner, Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad; Member Secretary, AP State Pollution Control Board; Chairman & Managing Director, and The Singareni Collieries Company limited, (SCCL).
During his tenure as Chairman and Managing Director of SCCL, the company achieved a stunning turnaround from a loss-making Public Sector Undertaking, to a profit-making enterprise. The company paid dividend to the Government of Andhra Pradesh and Government of India for the first time after 37 years, in 2003.
Rajen is also a recipient of several National and State level awards: 1. Telugu Uttama Seva Patram, Government of Andhra Pradesh, For Outstanding Work as Collector and District Magistrate, Khammam during 1986 Godavari River Floods. 2. Recognised for Turnaround of SCCL, Hyderabad Management Association, Coal India Limited, and Indian Institute of Industrial Engineering. 3. C.F. Andrews Distinguished Alumnus Award from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, in December, 2012.
